Speak of the Devil…
The day after I posted about the new Saint Eizabeths Hospital page, the DC Preservation League announced a new tour for April 4th. Unfortunately the tour filled up quickly and this post is pretty much useless—except to inform you that you can sign up for the waiting list.
Maybe they’ll schedule a tour for another day if there’s enough interest. Signing up for the waiting list is the best way to be notified if that happens, and to show the League that there’s enough interest.
The responder to the email address listed did contact me back to let me know the tour was full, but also indicated a potential May tour!
My understanding is that these tours are outside only, no interiors. Is that your understanding as well?
Yeah, the tour I went on in December was mostly exterior, but they did let us inside a couple buildings. We weren’t allowed inside the Kirkbride though (my photos of the interior are from an earlier visit a few years ago).
My b/f and I visited the hospital today and did get inside the old kirkbride. We only got to see a mere small portion of it but still was a treat to get to visit!
@Michelle – How did you manage to get inside the Kirkbride?
Does anyone know of any other way(s) to tour the West Campus?
FYI: They are still doing tours of the grounds and perhaps some buildings as others have noted. I got a spot on the June 19th, 2010 tour. I will try to post some photos if others are interested (and if they let me take any).
The contact information listed above to get a spot on a tour is still current. I am not sure how much longer they will do the tours, but they appear to still be doing one a month. It took a few days before I heard back by email, but if you are interested give it a go. I will try to find out on the tour on the 19th how much longer they expect to be offering these tours.
Just a quick update.
They are still going to keep offering the tours as long as possible, typically the third Sat. of the month. Use the contact information above to get a spot.
The tour this last sat. was of the grounds, no buildings, but very interesting. It looks as though much of the western campus and buildings will be preserved and reused by DHS and coast guard.
