Dayton Kirkbride to Close?
UPDATE: Regular reader Kirby sent me a link to this web site which proves the Kirkbride is a private retirement community. That means it’s not in danger of being abandoned. If I had taken the time, I would have found the same information in my own forum. That makes me feel pretty dumb:) Although that post is from two years ago…
An article in the Dayton Business Journal says the state-run psychiatric hospital in Dayton (formerly Dayton State Hospital) will shut down in July. The closing is part of state-wide budget cuts going into effect this year.
State Representative Clayton Luckie wants to find some sort of re-use for the hospital. You can read a little more about that here: Rep. Seeks New Use for State Property.
Another article—153-Year-Old Hospital to Shutter—mentions that the “distinctive main building” (which can only mean the Kirkbride) is now a retirement center. I’ve never visited Dayton so I don’t know much about it. A while ago someone told me that it had become a retirement home though, and I assumed that meant it was no longer part of the state psychiatric center. If anyone knows if it is still part of it, and that this closing means the Kirkbride is in danger of being abandoned, please comment. Thanks.
